Lee Suk Ju (b.1952)

Lee Seokju, a first-generation hyperrealist in Korea, has dedicated over 40 years to establishing the essence of representational painting. In the 1970s, a pivotal period in Korean contemporary art dominated by abstract painting, Lee introduced a new trend in figurative painting with his hyperrealistic works. Unlike American hyperrealism, which aimed to depict a mechanized and emotionally detached modern society, Lee Seokju expresses personal emotions and feelings through hyperrealistic representation. Lee Sukju’s artistic endeavors are assessed as “striving for authenticity and factual integrity in the conversational work.”
